Welcome to Burmese Women's Union

bwu_welcome.jpg

"BWU believes that unity and the participation of women is the basic unit for building a developed society. The BWU promotes and empowers women's roles in different fields. Discrimination against women causes hated, envy, revenge and other negative forces towards women and in society as a whole. Traditionally, women are viewed as beings meant to be tended to, taken care of and treated gently. We must realize that these notions only serve to undermine our self-confidence and self esteem.

In Western cultures, the term 'ladies first' may appear to give top priority to women, but women's rights activists and others see through this veil and recognize it as a patriarchal perception of women's weakness. This is just one sign of how gender inequality is woven into a culture.

Uniting as women is the main ammunition to fight these battles of discrimination and gender equality. Let us join hands and march together in this struggle for women's rights.
